I’m Katie and I’m a professional picture taker. Though if you’re on this website you probably know that by my name in bold font at the top of the page. I’m a student at Middle Tennessee State University and photographer in Middle Tennessee. I feel like this is where people usually put the type of photography they specialize in but I’m not sure I've found that niche yet. I take photos of things that evoke an emotion to me and I hope that my work conveys that. Part of my goal with this blog is to articulate and maybe narrow and find that specialty. Until then my specialty is undefined.
I’ve been photographing seriously for 4 years now and working in a photo studio for about 6 months. I work for JCPenny portraits and love my position there. It’s a type of photography I usually don’t explore myself and I feel like my job there has been invaluable in sharpening my portraiture and attention to details. I don’t have access to photoshop and 100 different tries to get the perfect image. I get 15 to 20 minutes in imperfect conditions and the ability to crop and rotate.
Despite the inherent limitations of the setting I feel like my photos are just as strong as some of the photos I take under conditions in my own comfort zone. It has also taught me to sell my work with confidence. I would recommend a job like this to anyone getting started in photography. It’ a crash course in working with the public and getting out of the bubble of conditions and subjects you know and are comfortable with.
I’m starting this blog as a platform to document my experiences with photography and establishing myself as a photographer. I hope other newcomers can find something relatable about this and I hope that maybe veterans in the field and non photographers can get a bit of entertainment out of my escapades and adventures.
